mediums vs lights: guitar strings?

How do you know what kind of strings are best for your guitar model? I’ve got a Takamine EG540C and i’ve got some elixer nanoweb MEDIUMS and some elixer polyweb EXTRA LIGHTS. Why? i don’t know. I’m thinking i should have just got LIGHTS to go with the ‘happy medium’…

But that would require me to go to the store again… and THEY could just answer my question… hmm. Thoughts?

It depends on the genre of music you’re wanting to play, lighter strings are thinner and feel easier to play, while medium strings will give you a fuller sound. If you’re wanting to play music like warm gentle soft songs, I’d say use the mediums, if you’re looking to play more D-beat punk or like crust than go with lights. I use lights to get a more brass sound from my bass, it gives it a better tone in my opinion.
