Cheap Wholesale Acoustic Guitar sounds better than really expensive one?

Hey guys. I’m about to leave for a 3 day camp thing and I didnt want to bring my $500 Seagull Acoustic guitar cuz i didnt wanna risk it getting ruined. So, instead i borrowed my cousin’s $60 liquidation store acoustic academy guitar and i was so shocked when it sounded a lot more richer in tone and quality than my guitar. I mean, my guitar was like $500 and it sounds worse than this $60 wholesale one. Should i change the strings on my guitar? Does it sound bad cuz the strings are worn out or strung badly? I know it didnt used to sound this bad. I just didnt notice as much because it was gradual but now that i compare it to another guitar (the $60 is practically new btw cuz my cousins dont ever use it), it sounds a lot worse. So, anyone have any tips on how to make my guitar have a better tone? Change the strings? do something funky with the neck or tuning or something? i really have no idea. please help! It sucks knowing that a $60 guitar is better than your $500 one….

As you mentioned before, change your strings. After a while, especially after many hours of play, the sweat, oils, and grime from your hands will tarnish your strings. Even if you can’t see spots on your strings, I guarantee it.

Also, the tone of the guitar depends on the wood and the cut of the wood used. If the wood is the issue, then what most likely happened is that you got a bad cut. There are different cuts of wood (just like meat) that have different qualities.

The neck and how you string it will not effect tone. It will effect playability, but not your sound.

If the change was gradual as you say, you need to change your strings. If it is a steel string acoustic, try Ernie Ball Acoustic Slinkies. They are about $6 a pack, and are some of the best you can buy. Dean Markley is good too, but much more expensive.

In all honesty, you need to change your strings at least once a month (if you only play an average of 7 or 8 hrs a week) or once a week (if you play more than two hours a day). This is the easiest way to keep your sound maitained and great.

I would almost bet you my life that just changing your strings will help dramatically.

I have played for a few years, and every time I change the strings, I’m impressed with the newfound richness that my guitar produces.

I own two acoustic guitars, three electric, and a bass, and it is the same with every single one.

*Hint: Putting a good, new set of strings on even the cheapest of guitars can make them sound much more expensive and richer.
