Guitar Strings Rattling

Bass Guitar strings rattle against the frets when I play? (not fret buzz)?
Hey, whenever I play my bass the strings seem to like hit the frets and make a kind of clacky sound, this particularily happens on the E and A strings, but does happen on all of them.
I have tried raising the action to stop it but it has to get to a very uncomfortably high level to completely stop it, I had an idea that it might be the truss rod but it doesnt look like the neck is bent to me.
Any help guys?
have you checked the neck? Fret the e string at the first fret and while holding it down use your other hand to fret whatever fret contacts the body on the E string, usually somewhere around 14 or 18. now look at the botton of the e sring in the middle of the neck. The gap beneath should but about the thickness of a dime . If its laying on the neck with no gap you should loosen the truss rod and give a little relief to the neck, if the gap is too big you should tighten the truss rod. This is not hard to do just remember dont twist the rod too tightly! If it breaks you have ruined the neck.
