guitar strings next day
Why do my strings break so quickly?

Okay, about 1 month and a half ago i put some Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky’s on my strat. They sounded great and then the other day… my high E string broke right next to the tuning peg! so i changed the string to a .10 and the next day i changed the tension on the springs in the back of the guitar because my bridge was floating way too high on it’s own. So then i tuned all my strings back by ear and my brand new high E string broke in the exact same area.. where the peg is right under the little tree thing on a strat. Then i was tuning my b string and once again the string broke in the exact same area under the tree. Why does this keep on happening? What can i do to prevent this from happening in the future? Is there something wrong with the strings i am using? Is it my guitar? Please tell me

Hello, Dee! It sounds like you have a string tree that has a sharp edge, causing the strings to break at the entrance point. That little stamped sheet metal piece is intended to ensure there is enough downward pressure maintained at the nut so the string does not pull free of the slot and will ring true. I really, really dislike the stock string trees, and replace those on my Stratocasters with roller trees, such as those from Guitar Fetish at http://store.guitarfetish.com/paofrosttrch.html . They are inexpensive and work flawlessly; no more hanging up the strings when bending or using the tremolo bar, either! Best regards, Dana
