Guitar Strings Electric Medium

Guitar strings?
My old electric guitar SERIOUSLY needs restringing… One of the strings just snapped whilst I was playing the damn thing, nearly took my arm off.
Problem is, i’m fairly new to the whole guitar thing, and whilst looking for some guitar strings, i’m getting baffled by “light” strings and “medium” strings, and all different sizes and thickess and… meh… you get the picture.
Please, fellow guitarists, please tell me as a starting out player whether I should really give a toss about all this stuff and just buy the first set of strings I can get my hands on!
most players of electric guitar use 9-42 or 10-46…I always buy Ernie Ball 10-46 ‘regular slinky’…but 9-42′s bend easier…
