Guitar Strings David Gilmour

Good blues/folk acoustic strings (w/ plain G string) ?
I have a Sigma acoustic and play a lot of lead guitar. I see a lot of lead guitarists like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd use a plain G on their acoustic (as opposed to the typical wound G) to get a more bluesy sound when they bend the G string. I also see a lot of folk artists using this same setup. I tried putting electric strings on my acoustic and it sounded decent, but strumming chords sounded bad. Are there any acoustic string sets that are sold with a plain G that will sound good. Any other ideas how I can best get this sound? Please help.
Unfortunately you are trying to get the best of both worlds and that may mean purchasing some custom strings.
A lot of folk players have an unwound G string because the nature of a folk guitar is different that a full dreadnought size guitar – the tension and internal bracing is different. On a classical guitar the strings are nylon and the G is unwound – on a folk guitar, the strings are silk and steel and MUCH less tension than on a standard steel string guitar.
PLEASE NOTE that putting the wrong strings on the wrong sort of guitar can damage the instrument!
If you have a standard steel string type of guitar (like I suspect your sigma is) and you want to create this compromise, you may need to look for a half/half kind of string set where the lower three are like good acoustic strings and the upper thrree are plain steel, a variety thinner than most acoustics, but thicker than average electrics.
Some manufacturers make sets like this, but they tend to be more expensive as they are sold at a lower volume than standard strings. Or you can order individual strings by gauge, and that can also be pricey, but you will KNOW you are getting what you want.
