Guitar Strings Boomers

How do you decide which strings to use on a guitar/bass?

I’ve been playing bass for about 5 years now, and I’ve always used GHS Boomers (medium). I’ve recently decided to see if there is anything else out there, that is either cheaper, or I can get more life/sound out of. To reiterate my question, how do you determine good strings from “lemons”?

Check guitar/bass magazines and sites for articles about strings.

And keep in mind, it’s more than a question of “good or bad”–different strings have different qualities. For example, roundwound strings sound brighter but are rougher on one’s hands, while flatwounds are easier to play but sound duller. Stainless steel strings last a long time but may be harder on your frets than nickel strings. And then there’s the whole question of light vs. heavy gauge.

The right set of strings will be determined by the style you play and the sound you’re trying to produce.
