Best bass guitar for metal/goth?

I want to begin playing bass, any recommendations on a good beginners bass. I want a four string with a nice metal/goth feel and possibly the up beat energetic tone of punk. Also, being this is my first, I don’t want it to break the bank, but i also don’t want it to be a piece of crap. And what amp, size/type of string, pedal should I pair it with?

Not having played either, I’d go with the ESP. I don’t think Dean makes decent quality guitars, but that’s just from my limited experience.

Your tone towards a certain style will come more from the amp, pedals, and especially eq than from the bass itself, as long as it puts out a decent signal.

I’m guessing a chorus pedal and maybe a distortion pedal like a Big Muff might be a good place to start.
